CMP Top-Mount filter threaded lock ring

This lock ring holds the cover in place on CMP Top-Mount filters. It holds down the filter cover against the water pressure inside the filter.

The lock ring has a spring-loaded grey tab, which drops into a notch on the filter housing when the ring has been sufficiently tightened. The main purpose of this tab is to discourage overtightening, and you have to lift it before you can unscrew the ring.
